Why Do Women Have Periods?

Let’s Know Why Do Women Have Period?

Menstruation is a unique phenomenon to women and we have almost 40 crores of mensurating women in India. Vaginal bleeding is a natural biological process with women having uterus and ovaries.

Mensuration age for most of the girls falls between 11-15 years, but some might get a bit earlier and some later. Normally it is a 28-day cycle which is an average figure with bleeding typically lasting around 4 to 5 days. It’s a process when your body readies itself for pregnancy by thickening your uterus lining with the release of an egg from one of your ovaries. The uterus erodes its lining and it’s passed, along with blood, out of the body through the vaginal opening.

Having sex close to the time of ovulation increases the chance of getting pregnant but if pregnancy doesn’t occur, estrogen and progesterone levels fall, eventually hitting a level that tells your body to begin menstruation. On an average woman who menstruates loses about 2 to 3 tablespoons of blood during her periods in a month.

Why Do Women Have Periods?

The period is a way of throwing out tissue that it no longer needs. Every month the lining of your uterus gets thicker preparing it for nurturing a fertilized egg which gradually gets implanted in the lining of your uterus. Every month when you don’t get pregnant, your body throws away tissue that it no longer needs to nourish a fertilized egg.

If a girl has sex on the day of ovulation, or in the three most fertile days of ovulation period the chance of getting pregnant is around 70% and a man’s sperm can live 3 to 5 days inside you, while your egg has longevity of only 1 day. If it has joined with the sperm during that period, it will be fertilized and joins with the uterus lining. This process is known as implantation henceforth pregnancy begins. Signaling your uterus that it will not bleed from now onwards for nine months, since the embryo got implanted in the wall of the uterus.

If the egg is not fertilized, the lining breaks down and bleeds. Then the same process gets repeated all over again. Estrogen And Progesterone hormones cause the lining of the uterus (or womb) to build up. It normally takes a month for the lining to re-build up, then break down. That is the reason why most girls and women get their periods around once a month.
